Archbishop's disappointment over locked out voters
Friday 07 May 2010
The Archbishop of York spoke out regarding the voting chaos.
Archbishop speaking
Following news that people in certain parts of the country had been denied the right to vote, the Archbishop issued the following statement:
"It's scandalous that hundreds of people were prevented from exercising their right to vote due to polling stations closing as people queued and in one case due to a lack of ballot papers.
I have in my own way been encouraging people to vote and I am bitterly disappointed that they were not able to do so. We all knew that this would be a closely fought election and how important each vote would be and I find it very hard to believe that arrangements were not in place to accommodate increased voter turnout. It is an outrage!"
The Archbishop was interviewed on Radio 4's The World at One on this matter and for a limited time you can listen again at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00s5jk7 (starts at 1:29:32)
