Archbishop of York Youth Trust Award Winners 2009 - Rachel Heesom and Serena O'Dea

Saturday 12 September 2009

Pupils from Sir Thomas Boteler School, Warrington, successfully campaigned to improve safety for elderly pedestrians as part of their Archbishop of York Discipleship Scheme. They are piloting the three-year initiative which involved learning about the Christian faith and doing practical service in the surrounding neighbourhood.

When a member of the group witnessed an elderly man tripping over a raised pavement and being injured, the group set about discovering how they might help and persuaded the council to lower pavements in the area to help the elderly.

Students also learned about the importance of the environment and set about cleaning up a local park in addition to organising a fashion show with clothing made exclusively from recycled materials.

Rachel Heesom and Serena O'Dea received the Archbishop Youth Trust Award on behalf of the pupils who took part in the first year of the scheme, entitled 'faith'. The next two years will see the focus turning to 'hope' and 'charity'.

The Youth Trust grant will help with developing the scheme for use in other schools and youth groups.

School chaplain Rev John Harries, who has helped to spearhead the scheme at Sir Thomas Boteler, says: "We're trying to help our children understand the
Christian faith and then put it into action in the community."
