Dean of the Arches and Auditor of the Chancery Court of York
Friday 01 May 2009
The Archbishops of Canterbury and York are delighted to announce the appointment of Charles George QC as Dean of the Arches and Auditor of the Chancery Court of York, following the retirement of Sheila Cameron CBE in March 2009.
Charles George was called to the Bar in 1974 and is a Bencher of the Inner Temple. He has practised as a barrister since 1975, most recently from Francis Taylor Building, Inner Temple. He specialises in public law, in particular in local government law and town and country planning. He also has judicial experience as a Recorder on the South East Circuit. Since 2007 he has been a Visiting Lecturer in European Environmental Law at King's College London.
Charles George has considerable legal experience in a Church context, having also specialised in ecclesiastical law and has appeared in various ecclesiastical law cases before consistory courts, the Court of Arches, the Court of Ecclesiastical Causes Reserved and the appellate committee of the House of Lords. He is a member of the Legal Advisory Commission of the General Synod and a member of the Council of St Stephen's House, Oxford. He has been Chancellor of the Diocese of Southwark since 1996 and Deputy Chancellor of the Diocese of Worcester since 1999. He has been a member of both provincial panels for appointment as Chairman of bishops' disciplinary tribunals since 2006
